FORTUNY FABRICS
Established in 1919 Fortuny Fabrics is a third-generation family business that specialises in the manufacture of bespoke fabric and textiles. Famous for its stunning silk-like appearance, the quality cotton is treated and woven with a secret recipe kept under tight lock and key with restricted access to only even a select few employees. These artisans manufacture the fabrics at every stage and are required to wear gloves when handling and processing their work.
Unique to Venice the Fortuny factory is one of a kind and has been located on the site of the original factory founded by Mariano Fortuny almost a century ago when the demand outgrew his small Venetian studio.
Situated on the site of an ancient convent on the island of Giudecca, the factory itself is not open to the public however the family have worked to maintain the stunning original gardens of the convent and invite the public to view them.
Fortuny Fabrics have become woven into the history of Venice and have been instrumental in preserving the culture of Venetian art. Born out of a demand for silk at a time when the material was scarce and expensive to import, Fortuny Fabric’s own pieces have become more valuable and renowned due to their durability and distinctive quality.
Each fabric has a history and represents a different part of Italian culture, from the Roman Empire to the Silk Road and the survival of the city of Venice throughout the ages.
Found in the most luxurious palazzo’s across Italy the fabrics come in wool and velvet options and an ever-growing range of stunning collections.
The range of Classics and Damask style pieces are perhaps the most iconic and have carried well through the history of Fortuny brand as a remarkable selection of reinterpretations of classic motifs for contemporary audiences.
Other styles such as the Geometrics and Moderns or the printed velvets and florals are just as important to the story of Fortuny and a clear evolution of the brand can be seen in these patterns.
Since its conception the company has been synonymous with luxury and opulence. Introduced to New York by Countess Elsie Lee Gozzi the fabrics can be found in the most prestigious homes across Europe and America. Michael Chard has been granted exclusive access to the Fortuny empire and through this partnership is now able to deliver the inspired textiles to Palazzo Collezioni clients.
